I am a contemporary artist, working predominantly in textiles, yarns, paint and clay. My work incorporates themes of narrative, character and nature, and are inspired by my childhood memories of holidays by the sea, by landscape, cultural traditions, and mythology.
I have an avid interest in stitched textiles which now spans over 40 years. My mam and Gran thought me to sew , knit and crochet. During my work life as an art therapist and counsellor I explored a number of crafts such as weaving and ceramics. Today all of my acquired skills link together to create my work by harnessing natural processes and working with found, gathered and grown materials. All my work is signed with my family name, Murphy, an ancient Irish name. I graduated from the National University of Ireland in 2003. From 2009 I have been a qualified Fetac tutor and counsellor. From 2016 to 2017 I studied pottery and ceramics with sculpture and potter Caron O'Rourke in Pinoso Spain. In 2019 at The National College of Art and Design I studied Textiles and Embroidery. I am currently a student of The Royal School Of Needlework, Hampton Court, England. I am taking the Certificate/Diploma in Technical Hand Embroidery. To date I have completed the Jacobean ,canvas work and silk shading modules. I am currently doing the Goldwork module. I have taught classes at the Knit and Stitch show in Alexandra Palace and also at Olympia London. I have given classes to members of the Women's Institute in Northumberland England and exhibited my works in Dublin, Wexford, Northumberland and Spain. My current collection that I am working on , A Crow and a Few Sparrows, is greatly influenced by the historic landscape where I live. My garden studio is a short walk from Tintern Abbey and Colclough Gardens on the sea shore of Bannow Bay with all its wild beauty and views to the open sea.
